Short Description of Activity

Kris, Barb, Linda, Rosanne, Laurie, Bondi, Lorena, and MaryJane Holland met to discuss “Killers of the Flower Moon” book.

Reflection/Evaluation

We were very informal and discussed the book as well as the author. We all agreed that it was an important piece of history that needed to be told and that it was a very violent and oppressive book to read. We had a visitor, MaryJane, who I hope will join Broads. We also enjoyed a carrot cake that Laurie made and cookies that Linda baked. It was a great way to spend the rainy afternoon inside with friends.

One problem that I ran into was that I had borrowed all books from the Fort Vancouver Library and they were due so I returned the books but one person who did not show up for the book group and did not return her book. The library was not happy with me and wanted to know in detail why I did not have the book and how this person came to get the book. I had to explain in detail that the person has a disability, is low income, does not own a car, and has major challenges in life. Furthermore, I had to explain that it would be discrimination by not giving that person a book, even though I suspected she would not return it to me. I told the library that I would definitely return the book if she gave it to me but that I had emailed her and did not get a response. In the future I will not provide this person with a book unless she returns the one I gave her. The library gave me a pass once I explained all of this but I was warned that it would be my last pass.

Other than that, the group went fine!
