Short Description of Activity

Steigerwald Earth Day Event

Reflection/Evaluation

We placed mulch around 150 saplings that were planted earlier in the season for our Earth Day project at Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge in Washougal, Wa. We carried and filled the buckets with bark mulch and poured them around each individual tree. Then we made a round bowl out of the mulch around the tree to create a basin for the water for when it rained. There were many dead saplings, however. We hope that this project will decrease the mortality of the trees. Great snacks, as usual! The weather was great and it was a great day at the refuge! The sign up with LCEP is so great and I don’t have to concern myself with liability waivers, because LCEP has their own waivers and registration process.

The registration for the event was a breeze as the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership took care of the registration information as well as the liability forms.
