Short Description of Activity

Spring Fling to Kennewick with Julie, Debra Ellers, and Pam Conley.

Reflection/Evaluation

Linda Buckley, Barb Fox Kilgore, Laurie, Micky, and Kris Vannoy joined Julie Weikel, Debra Ellers and Pam Conley for a field trip to visit the Manhatten Project B Reactor Tour of the facility. This was truly the best part of the entire event and we visited the places where the workers worked and saw the equipment and protective clothing that they wore. It was so amazing that the entire project was kept such a secret at that time!

We also visited the Wanapum Heritage Center of the Priest Rapids Wanapum tribe. The 50,000 sq ft facility houses a 10,000 sq ft permanent exhibit space, a 2,000 sq ft temporary rotating exhibit space, a climate contraolled repository and collection facility, a library, and open space for large group activities, conferences, demonstrations, training, and living culture program activities. We checked to see if we could rent the space for a BW but they had no intention of renting their space to us white folks.

Then we went to the Sacagawea State Park to the Palouse Tribe Cultural Gathering on Friday. This was a cultural demonstration with drumming/dancing/ chanting by the tribes. The elders then shared their stories of continuing their culture and their responsibilities to do so among the most challenging of times. The Sacagawea State Park is actually a cultural landscape for the tribe where they used to convene on the ceded land on the park on the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers. It was very emotional for the Tribes to be there. We didn’t get to have the salmon lunch they had prepared as we had to leave for home. The speeches from the elders were very long and sad. I was glad that were were invited and appreciated the offer.

Overall, it was a great event and our chapter showed a great attendance, as usual.
