Short Description of Activity

Our grazing monitoring team held two strategy meetings during April. One covered issues such as if/ how to add folks to our monitoring team, and discussing preliminary data from our outreach about uplands monitoring and voluntary retirements. (Summarizing input received form organizations such as Center for Biological Diversity, Western Watershed, Amigos Bravos, NM Wild, Wild Earth Guardians in addition to Gila Natl. Forest Ranger Districts.) Also, two of our team members met with the Wilderness District Range staff person who outlined key places that could benefit from monitoring. He also communicated that snow pack this recent winter was 150%!

Reflection/Evaluation

We all agreed that a voluntary “job” description was very much needed to share with folks interested in participating – potential team members. After the meeting a well written and realistic description was produced, with input and consensus by all of the team. It is ready for use whenever needed. Notes on the meeting at the Wilderness District were compiled and will be used for planning future monitoring trips in the districts/ areas discussed. Both meetings were productive and will help us move forward. We also emphasized the need to come up with ways that interested folks who may not be able to hike in areas that we do or don’t want to drive as far as we do – can contribute to our grazing monitoring stewardship and advocacy in meaningful ways.
