Key Issue: Public Lands Health & Protection
Activity Type: Stewardship (monitoring, sampling, planting, etc.)
Key Partners: Western Slope Conservation Center, Colorado West Land Trust, Delta County
Short Description of Activity
Delta County is working with WSCC and the Colorado West Land Trust in a parcel of land by the Gunnison River by the bridge on G50. The county has taken responsibility to put in a boat ramp area so people traveling the river will have a safe place to stop. They have put in a dirt road and a parking area where people can park and watch cranes in the winter in the neighboring field. The conservation groups are focusing on the land, planting native species and removing invasives. I am working with them on this effort, planting, bringing in water to keep new plants alive. There is no source of water at the site readily available. I will be going weekly or more to bring in water for some of the things planted. The goal is to make this area more beneficial to wildlife and for outdoor recreation on the river.
Reflection/Evaluation
The goal is to make this area a healthier natural landscape for the benefit of plants and wildlife along with supporting appropriate recreational use.It is a work in progress that will take time.
