Short Description of Activity
I have been running an advocacy alert in my weekly emails to the WHALES during April and May, as follows:
Advocacy Alert: Great Old Broads is asking us to read about and sign their petition to designate the Owyhee Canyonlands a National Monument. The Owyhee Canyonlands of southeast Oregon is a remarkable mix of ancient geologic forces and ecological wonders, including many species of plants that can be found nowhere else on Earth. This vast landscape represents one of the last truly wild places left in the lower 48 states. In addition, the Owyhee Canyonlands have a rich human history that dates back at least 10,000 years (if not much longer), and are an important historical, cultural, and spiritual place for the Bannock, Northern Paiute, and Shoshone Tribes. But the Owyhee Canyonlands are also under threat from industrial development, livestock grazing, unmanaged recreation, and climate change. This natural wonder needs the permanent protection that would come from national monument designation. Take Action at Owyhee . Tell the White House and Oregon’s U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley that you support the creation of Owyhee Canyonlands National Monument! Please let me know when you sign the petition; Great Old Broads keeps track of these actions. And thank you to those WHALES who have already signed!
Reflection/Evaluation
Several members were moved to sign the petition.
