Short Description of Activity

Barbara Phalen and Nora Langan attended this event on behalf of our Broadband. I was still sick with the flu.

Reflection/Evaluation

Barbara Phalen reported the following to me after the event:
Nora and I attended, and we made the acquaintance of Mr. Rutt who is the administrator of the Peace and Justice Institute, who took Nora’s name for future reference. I met a young woman, Sheila Edwards , who did the graphics and was one of the organizers of the event and gave her my name and number and encouraged her to get in touch. Hope she does.. The students had been in conferences for the past week. They understood the importance of working to save the salmon very well and enthusiastically supported breaching the dams. I also saw a Nimiipuu tribe member there who had been at the Clearwater with us and remembered our involvement. I have forgotten his name, and he didn’t reintroduce himself. I reminded him about the rally in Olympia and he said he might come up for it. He was very excited about the response of the students to breach the dams! Which tells me that even though they tribes have agreed to ten years to establish alternative power, they are more in favor of taking those down. Most of the students were 15-16 years old and there were some SU students in environmental studies who spoke. We need to find a way to encourage those voices. Most of the students were from private Catholic high schools and came from distances on their school buses.one of the Participating schools was Bellarmine which I think is in Tacoma. A good conference and worth following up.

After receiving this report, I asked how many people Barbara thought were in attendance. Barbara said “the room was full.” She estimated about 150 people were there.
