Short Description of Activity

Laurie and Rosanne ground truthed Silver Vista Unit 4 and Unit 5 in the Yacolt Burn State Forest.

Reflection/Evaluation

The objective of the activity was to survey the parcel due for harvesting from Washington Department of Natural Resources for structural complexity, tree species and size, understory plants, and steepness of slopes. For the Unit #4 we found a 32″ hemlock and other silver fir species as well as 60% 20-30″ nurse logs; 20% 10 – 20″ nurse logs; and 20% +30″ nurse logs. The majority (60%) of the forest was western hemlock; 30% was Doug Fir; and 10% was Silver Fir trees. Understory plants included vine maple, salal, Oregon Grape, sword fern, red huckleberry, beargrass, solomon seal, trillium, and salmonberry. We also noted a 15-20 degree slope. It was our first time using ONX Hunt app and there was definitely a steep learning curve on that! We do need more practice.

Unit #5 was a small unit and we noted the greater percentage of small tree species of Doug Fir and Western Hemlock of 20″dbh. There were also Silver Fir and a few alder on the site. We also noted a significant slope of 30-40 degrees on the SW corner of the parcel. Any parcel greater than 35 degrees is at significant risk of landslide. We noted the following understory plants: trailing blackberry, red huckleberry, Oregon Grape, Fiddlehead, Solomon Seal, salal, salmonberry, and vine maple. It should also be noted that the popular Tarbell trail runs right through the parcel.

We had to hike about 2 miles on the Tarbell Trail to get to the parcels. We never would have found it had we not used ONX Hunt app. Great app!

We joined Rosanne’s dog, Sadie, who was her usual perfectly behaved mutt. We had a few sprinkles, but nothing major. It was a great day and I can’t wait for our next field checking day! I need to figure out how to submit the data on the CRF website. I did scan the data sheet and sent it to Jim at CRF.
