Short Description of Activity
Rosanne and Laurie surveyed Unit #3 of Silver Vista parcel in Yacolt Burn State Forest.
Reflection/Evaluation
The goal of the activity was to identify the structural complexity and forest description. We noted that the largest tree was a 42″ Doug Fir and a 34.5″ Silver Fir. See photos below. Other tree species included Western Hemlock. Understory plants included salal, red huckleberry, vine maple, solomon seal, swordfern, Oregon Grape, trailing blackberry, wild ginger, and beargrass. The forest also maintained a mid-story canopy, nurse logs, as well as canopy gaps. Particularly noteworthy was a 35 degree slope into Rock Creek. We noted 100% of the nurse logs were over 30″dbh. The majority (70%) of the doug fir were 25-30″ dbh and the majority (70%) of the Western Hemlock were small (10 – 15″dbh). The only seedlings that we observed were doug fir.
We had a great dry day and we actually had a trail to follow along the boundary of the unit. In looking at the other 2 parcels to the north of these 3 units, were were unsure how to access these parts of the units. Rosanne has ordered the Green Trails maps of the area which should provide more information for access. I still had difficulty saving the waypoints with photos on the app. I finally figured it out, though!
