Landscape/area: Coronado National Forest (AZ) (1718945 acres)
Short Description of Activity
Camped with Greta Anderson from Western Watersheds Project and Emily Renn, Ex Director of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project.
We were placing “Know the difference between Coyotes and Wolves” posters in the Chiricahua Mountains. This was due to the Manada del Arroyo pack, wolves Llave and Wonder, being re-released in the Peloncillo Mountains and relocating themselves West to the Chiricahua Mountains.
Reflection/Evaluation
The DOJ’s McKittrick policy makes it difficult to prosecute the killers of Mexican gray wolves. The goal was to place these posters throughout the Chiricahua Mountains so if a wolf was killed illegally they could not argue that they thought it was a coyote and get away with it.
We also by chance ran into population geneticist and conservation biologist Phil Hedrick, who worked with Mexican gray wolf genetics. Serendipity. He stopped by our campsite and we talked about Mexican gray wolves and genetics for a few hours.
