Short Description of Activity
This stewardship activity involved gathering native plant seeds for prairie restoration at the Pacific Rim Institute on Whidbey Island. The Institute engages in ecological restoration, particularly prairie restoration. The Institute’s habitat recovery work includes cultivating native plants in their Native Plant Center; collecting and storing seeds from wild and propagated native plants; outplanting native species of grasses, forbs, trees, and shrubs; and providing seeds and young plants for restoration projects throughout the region.
As volunteers, our task was to gather camas and spring gold seeds for the Pacific Rim Institute. We did the native plant seed gathering on the prairie behind the Institute. The Pacific Rim Institute owns and maintains 175 acres of land, much of it prairie.
Reflection/Evaluation
This stewardship activity was highly successful. Ten of us Broads worked for more than two hours gathering camas and spring gold seeds. In total, we gathered many bushels of seeds, which the Institute will then use for its own prairie restoration work or sell to other entities. Afterwards, several of us toured the Institute’s Native Plant Center and purchased plants.
