Short Description of Activity
The Aldo Silver City Broadband Steering Committee decided to have a postcard advocacy session at the 2024 Gila Wilderness Centennial Broadwalk for those who couldn’t participate in the service project or preferred postcard advocacy. The old postcard template was updated by Susan Kearns, of GOBW in Durango in July and features an action image of our stewardship. We focused on three issues – climate change, proposed increase in Airforce combat training over our wilderness, and wolves (in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Montana and nationally). Joanie Connors found current articles and information for the advocacy folders and she and Marcia had the articles and 100 postcards printed. On Tuesday morning of the retreat, 5 Broadwalk participants filled out postcards and letters with messages, and several more wrote postcards later in the day.
Reflection/Evaluation
It went well and quite a few advocacy postcards on relevant issues were sent. We could make it even more successful in the future by reminding folks several times where/ when to meet even though it is on the event agenda. Steering Committee member leading this activity put in a lengthy effort compiling information. It remains a good optional activity during such outdoor gatherings. We are proud of our postcards and hope that they are effective.
