Short Description of Activity
Several of our leadership team members participated in review of the Final EIS and Draft Record of Decision for the Gila Natl. Forest new Land Management Plan. We focused our review on the topics we commented on earlier during the DEIS comment period in 2020. These included topics such as wilderness designation, Wild & Scenic River designation, riparian issues and livestock grazing. After review, we decided to sign-on to the objection document produced by New Mexico Wild staff as it was similar to our previous comments. This focused on additional wilderness recommendations and Wild & Scenic River recommendations for sections of the Gila and San Francisco Rivers and their tributaries. (Recommended acreage for additional wilderness was actually decreased from what the forest had proposed in the DEIS.)
Reflection/Evaluation
The review went OK. It was very helpful to have 2 co-leaders reviewing the LMP. Of course we do not know the results of the objection as of yet. (It was interesting that one of the primary reasons stated for not recommending more wilderness acreage was the concern over large stand replacement relative to fire. Plus maintaining fences for livestock in wilderness.) We would have likely signed on to additional objections written by other organizations such as CBD, however the objections were received too late (several hours before they were due). There was no time for the remaining Co-leader to read these other objections, unfortunately.
