Key Partners: Mary O’Brien, Region 6 Forest Service
Short Description of Activity
Virtual meeting with Region 6 Forest Service personnel regarding our request for having AOI information, pasture allotment information, and other needed information placed on their website to assist our grazing monitoring project without having to do a FOIA. We had met amongst ourselves prior to this meeting to designate who was going to cover which subject so we could stay on track time-wise and respect everyone’s time.
Reflection/Evaluation
Overall meeting went well. Informed them of the work we are doing and who we are. Discussed what has been helpful in Region 4 which is what we would like to see. Explained the issues we are running into when trying to monitor grazing on public lands and either get rubbish that you can’t decipher, don’t get timely response or are forced to do a FOIA. Two FS personnel had discussed with Region 4 the pro’s and con’s. One individual did not seem to keen on posting this information. The others were more receptive and understand that the FOIA process actually creates more work for them. We left it with a compromise if they would consider 4 forests in Eastern Oregon as a trial as we recognize that to have this information on Region 6 forests could be a bit overwhelming initially. The meeting was left that I will make contact in early January so we can follow up. They have to take this information higher up the food chain to be discussed before any decisions can be made. Mary O did send them specifics on Region 4 so they had an idea of what we are looking for.
