Key Partners: Hispanic Affairs Project; Ute Mountain Ute Tribe
Short Description of Activity
Ongoing communication with HAP and Ute Mountain Ute chairman Heart and Regina. Creation of a survey re: future activities for HAP participants at August Ridgway State Park outing. One Broad attended the HAP open house at their new office/community center in Montrose
Reflection/Evaluation
Disappointing to learn that the December 2023 meeting between Chairman Heart and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, DC did not result in any action being taken at the White Mesa Mill.
Following HAP staff review of the survey created for HAP members regarding future activities, HAP discouraged Broads from sending the survey indicating HAP was involved in a larger collaborative GOCO-funded project to improve access for members to the outdoors and there would be listening sessions and other means of gathering information from members that staff deemed more effective than our survey. Discouraging on both accounts. Needing to rethink how our BB can support efforts to reduce pollution and human health risks from White Mesa Mill. Considering outreach to Tim Peterson at Grand Canyon Trust. Also will follow up with HAP in new year. Gathering at HAP office was a great opportunity to network, make new connections and see friends in the Latino community.
