Short Description of Activity
Barbara Phalen (the founder of our Broadband) and I attended the Great Old Broads Wilderness and Beyond Conference in October. We tried to attend different sessions so that we could learn as much as we could from the Conference. I particularly enjoyed the session on “Out of our Comfort Zone” which featured Mary O’Brian, Cyndi Anderson, and Robyn Cascade. They discussed strategies for working with folks with whom we disagree. I also attended a session by John Leshy on Mining and was shocked to learn that what occurs in mining is still governed by the Mining Law of 1872. Wow! I was deeply affected by the session on “Decolonizing Stewardship” in which Tribal member, Iona Jones, described how she is still trying to recover the bones of more than 200 of her ancestors who were buried before the Lower Snake River Dams were built and whose bones lay under the River. I thought that he most impressive keynote speakers were Jazzari Taylor from Latino Outdoors and Tracy Stone-Manning, Director of the Bureau of Land Management.
Reflection/Evaluation
I enjoyed the Wilderness and Beyond Conference and learned a lot. An additional highlight was the Elk Tour with a guide who took us throughout Estes Park to view the sites and see the elk.
